Orvill Albert Horton

Orvill Albert Horton passed away on January 21, 2025 at his home in Bartlesville, Oklahoma at the age of 86. He was the son of Orvill Horton and Mary Albertine Leugemors Horton (Moland), born on July 3, 1938 at the home of his grandparents, Albert and Genevieve Leugemors in Barnsdall, Oklahoma. During his early life, his family moved many times living in the Texas panhandle and Poza Rica, Veracruz, Mexico because of his father’s work as an engineer with Phillips Petroleum Company. By 1950, the family settled back in Bartlesville. Orvill spent summers with his Grandpa Leugemors who lived in Wichita Falls, TX and attended 10th grade there. The rest of his education was in Bartlesville Public Schools where he graduated from College High School in 1957. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps Active Reserves his last two years of high school. Then after graduation, he enlisted full time in the US Air Force and went through basic training as an aircraft and engine mechanic. He was stationed for two years on the island of Bermuda at Kindley Air Force Base. He often mentioned how lonely it was on that little island where many people vacationed, and he longed to come back to Oklahoma. He requested Tinker AFB in Oklahoma but was sent to California to Vandenburg Air Force Base! He was a crew chief with the 392nd Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, Strategic Air Command, 2nd Missile Division. He always had stories to tell about his experiences in the Air Force, and he always added his own special humor that made it entertaining as well. After his discharge from the Air Force in June 1961, he enrolled at Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma. He met Cindy Fortson there and they were married the next year on May 31, 1962. He also attended Oklahoma University in Norman, Oklahoma for a year before starting his working career. He worked various jobs in the oil fields, construction, and as a machinist. While living in the Kansas City area, he was hired by Phillips Petroleum Company as a stillman at the KC Refinery and worked there until it closed in 1982. He was able to transfer back to Bartlesville OK to Applied Automation as a machinist, tool and die maker. Later in 1985, he transferred to the Plastics Technical Center of Phillips Petroleum Co. and worked as a mold builder until his retirement in 1998. Orvill and Cindy were blessed with three wonderful children, Barbara, Albert, and Mike. They enjoyed outdoor activities, especially camping trips during the summer months. Orvill is survived by his wife of 62 years: Cindy Horton. Daughter: Barbara L. Burruss, and Son: Michael O. Horton. Grandchildren: Daniel E. Brown (Hannah), Damon J. Burruss (Madison), Sarah L. Close (Derek), Victoria A. Horton, and Tara D. Harris (Zachary). Great-Grandchildren: Beau B. Close, Brooks D. Close, and Addeline J. Burruss. Brother: Richard G Horton (Jeannie), Sisters: Mary Wood, Elma Dirolf, Giselle Horton, and Terri Horton. Nieces: Regina Wagner (Michael), Lisa Sessions (Richard) and Nephew: Blane Wood (Dana). He is preceded in death by his sister: Lora G. Holland, son: Albert Warren Horton, and grandson: Zachary Marshall Horton.
