Mr. Fred William Powers Jr. Fred William Powers, Jr., age 94, of Cedar Creek, TX, passed away peacefully on Sept. 24, 2016. Fred was the only son of Fred and Charlotte Powers born in Oglesby, Oklahoma. Fred grew up during hard times in Oklahoma in the middle of the Dust Bowl during the depression. He joined the Navy during WWII as part of the Signal Corp. His teletype skills were needed by the British and he was assigned to the HMS Indomitable of the Royal Navy. He was a self-made man and moved to Borger, TX in 1950 where he was a builder and developer. His first subdivision was Knight Crest and later he built custom homes in Yucca Park. He enjoyed flying and acquired his Private Pilot’s license in Border in the 60s. He was an avid aviator and logged in hundreds of hours to achieve multi engine and instrument ratings. In 1970 Fred and his then wife, Ruby, moved to Austin, TX where he became an award winning Realtor and continued to build beautiful custom homes and develop Austin. Fred married Maria Powers in 1987 and they continued to grow the real estate business in and around Austin. Fred loved discussing politics and world events and had a keen mind to the very end. He taught many of his kids to fly and water ski and was quite an athlete. We could always count on him for a good conversation, even if we didn’t agree. In fact, he probably liked it best when we didn’t. He had a great sense of humor that we all enjoyed to the very end. Fred had a very amiable personality and while he was active he enjoyed the company of many friends in Austin and surrounding area. He continued to return to Oklahoma often and visit friends and relatives and was always excited to see old friends, rehash stories from their youth and learn what paths life had taken them down. Fred will be remembered always and missed deeply by family and friends. He is survived by his wife Maria Powers, sons Denny and Bill Powers and daughter Debby Powers. Fred also leaves behind grandchildren, great grandchildren and many dear friends. Friends who wish may sign the online guest book and leave condolences at www.stumpff.org.
