Floy Kygar Warzel

Floy Regina Kygar Warzel, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, died Sunday, December 17, 2017, at Bartlesville Health and Rehab Community while a resident of Green Country Village Retirement Community, Bartlesville, Okla. She was 95. She was born August 21, 1922, in a cabin on Dog Creek in Osage County, Oklahoma, the daughter of Herbert and Roslyn Lemert Kygar. Soon after, she, her parents and her older brother Vaughn moved to a house on Buck Creek, also in Osage County. In 1929, the family moved to a farm they purchased on the Caney River near Hewins in Chautauqua County, Kansas. There Floy accumulated many fond memories of friends, relatives, horseback riding and a special 1938 trip in their new four-door Ford automobile to California, visiting family and seeing sites along the way. Floy graduated from Cedar Vale, Kan., High School, then attended Kansas State Teachers College of Pittsburg, now Pittsburg State University, preparing to become a teacher. She described her time there as “truly happy, noisy years,” perhaps heightened during her sophomore year when her brother Vaughn introduced her to his fellow chemistry student, F. Morgan Warzel of Walnut, Kan. World War II intervened and in 1943 she began a two-year hiatus inspecting subassemblies for Boeing B-29 airplanes in Wichita, Kan., and later teaching elementary school at Buffalo, Kan. She and Morgan Warzel were married December 27, 1945, at her parents’ farm home in Hewins, Kan. After a short honeymoon, Floy finished her college semester at Pittsburg, then joined Morgan who was stationed with the US Navy at the Ward Island Naval Training Station near Corpus Christi, Texas. There she worked as a clerk typist at the Naval Main Base, also near Corpus Christie. Later, the couple moved to Bartlesville where Morgan spent a year as a chemist and Floy a clerk for Phillips Petroleum Company. In 1947, through GI Bill benefits, Morgan and Floy moved to Columbus, Ohio, where Morgan completed his doctoral studies in chemical engineering at Ohio State University and Floy worked at Battelle Memorial Institute. While in Columbus, the Warzels’ son, Kirk Morgan Warzel, was born in 1950. After their return to Phillips in Bartlesville, their daughter, Sharon Dale Warzel Ryan, born in 1952, was among the first babies born at Jane Phillips Hospital. The Warzels spent subsequent years yo-yoing in and out of Bartlesville through Morgan’s work with Philips. In 1954 they moved for eight years to Idaho, Falls, Idaho. There Floy fell in love with nearby Yellowstone National Park and Jackson Hole, Wyo. Later they moved back to Bartlesville where their children grew up,then to Greenville, S.C., for seven years and a chance to see the Eastern Seaboard, and finally back to Bartlesville. A favorite experience of these years was living in Lyon, France, during the summer of 1966 while Morgan was on a project for Phillips, and doing as the French did during August -- traveling. It would be 28 years before Floy returned to Europe, this time on a trip with Kirk. She made up for lost time with six subsequent trips in seven years when her traveling companions included Morgan, Kirk, her two grandchildren, friends from Bartlesville and Columbus, and a final trip in 2001 with her daughter Sharon. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ and active in congregations wherever she lived. Floy is survived by her husband of 71 years, F. Morgan Warzel, of the home; son Kirk Warzel, Idaho Falls, Idaho; daughter Sharon Warzel Ryan and son-in-law Kevin Ryan, Broomfield, Colo.; grandson Jordan (Jenny) Ryan, Torrance, Calif.; granddaughter Melissa (Kevin) Fore, St. Louis, Mo.; great-grandchildren Logan and Lillian Ryan, Torrance, Calif.; niece Jean Kygar Eblen, Lawrence, Kan.; and nephew Clyde (Shirley) Kygar, Tulsa, Okla. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Vaughn, and an infant sister. Floy requested no funeral. Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, at Stumpff Funeral Home in Bartlesville, where the family will receive guests from 5 to 8 p.m. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, at Ozro Falls Cemetery north of Hewins, Kan. In lieu of flowers, Floy’s family suggests donations to Hope Harbor Children’s Home, PO Box 1047, Claremore, Okla. 74108.
