John Wood

Johnny Wood, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, died on March 3, 2024 in Tulsa, OK at the age of 68. Johnny was born on September 29, 1955, to his parents James Jink Wood and Jean Louise McCarty Wood. He attended Alma High School in Alma, KS. and graduated in 1973. After graduation, Johnny worked on a 75,000-acre ranch in Wyoming. His job was to ride through the mountains and push the stray cattle out. He could ride alone for days looking for cattle and this was his favorite “job” of all time. He worked for the Longhorn Rodeo Company for many years based in Whites Creek, Tennessee. He was a handy man who framed houses on the side. He broke and trained horses his entire life. He made custom, hand tooled leather goods, but it was mostly a hobby that he enjoyed doing in his spare time. He always had leather with him, and he would be fiddling around making key chains, knife sheaths, or just anything he could put his unique touch on. Throughout his life, Johnny had many hobbies and passions. He was a cowboy in the truest form since the day he was born. He loved to fish and could often be found with a fishing pole in hand, no matter where he went. Johnny's true joy came from rodeoing, riding horses, and working cattle. He spent countless hours horseback, whether he was working on the ranch, riding to the grocery store, or simply enjoying the open countryside. In addition to his love for the outdoors, Johnny was also a talented musician and artist. He will be deeply missed by all knew him. Johnny had many accomplishments including 1979, Worlds Largest Bull Riding Champion, Ardmore, OK; 1980 Madison Square Garden Bull Riding Champion, New York City, NY; 1986 URA Bull Riding Champion; and 3-time IPRA Bull Riding Qualifier 1982, 1989, 1994. He was also a member of the 1980 Tulsa Twisters Rodeo Team. Preceding him in death were his father, James Jink Wood; his mother, Jean Louise McCarty Wood; sister, Marcia Beland; brother in law, Leon Beland and nephew John Scott. Johnny is survived by his four children; Scott Wood, Connie (Corey) Smith, Dustin (Lacy) Wood, and Adelyn (Wood) Hernandez, Brother; Jerry (Jeanette) Wood, Sister; Deanna Wood, his grandchildren; Skylar Wood, Spur Wood, Dylan Hight, Kennedy Hight, Beckham Wood and Lane Wood. Nieces Stacia (Dusty) Spencer, Angie (Rick) Harmon, Nephews Curt (Toni) Wood, Shane Valentine, Josh Wood and numerous great nieces and nephews.
