John Henry Donald Chaney Sr.

John Chaney Sr., age 86 passed away peacefully on October 18, 2024 in Bartlesville Oklahoma. He was born June 19, 1938, in Coffeyville, Kansas to Henry Chaney and Norma Baxter (King). John grew up in various places, he loved to tell the story of how he went to 13 different schools in 12 years. He had very fond memories of Philson Farms and Endocott Ranch where his dad worked. Those are the 2 places growing up where he learned about and began to love the cattle industry. John married Joy Ann Cox of Dewey on July 7, 1956. They had 4 children and made their home east of Copan for many years. John worked various jobs including Gas Service Company, until deciding to have a large hog farm full time. They had an arena at their house that was a host for bulldoggers and cowboys from all parts of the country. John was married for many years to Vickie Weber for several years and they made their home in Copan. Together they ran a large hog operation south of Copan. John married Donna Kay Forrest on October 23, 1989. They made their home south of Copan and purchased the Copan Truck Stop from brother Bob Chaney and wife Kerry in April of 1993. He and Donna also had a large purebred Angus Cow operation that still exists today. John made a name for himself selling low birthweight Angus bulls that are in very high demand to this day. John loved telling stories. He was the unofficial President of the “liars table” at the truck stop that for many years, retired men of the community met every morning to gossip, argue at times, and basically solve all the world problems, so they said! John was a longtime member of the American Angus Association. He was also very proud of being the person that started the current Copan Round Up Club. He along with brother, Lon Chaney; friends, Milt Foreman, Dan Houser, Danny Lemmons, Ed May, Walt Donnell, and Bud Moody built and began the current arena and club, with Big John being the first President. Preceded in death by: Wife, Donna Forrest Chaney; Parents Henry Chaney and Norma King Baxter; Brother Jim Chaney, and Nephew Jimmy Chaney. He is survived by his children, John Chaney Jr, and wife Dawn of Copan; daughter LouAnn Nelson and husband Todd of Skiatook; daughter Jania Whittaker and husband Lyle of Miller Mo; Daughter Julie Woody and partner Ronnie Hatheway of Copan. Two Stepchildren: Paul Fiddler and wife Tamara of Bartlesville; and Heidi Graham of Skiatook. Eight Grandchildren Anthony, Lindsay, Kyle, Jake, Ty, Samantha, Shelby and Morgan, Eleven Great Grandchildren Brenae, Braeley, Elias, Charli, Ellie, Benton, Ellie, Ava, Evelyn, Daniel and Lila and two Brothers, Lon Chaney and wife Becky of Copan, and Bob Chaney and wife Kerry of Dewey. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to the Legends Classic Livestock Jackpot scholarship fund that began last summer in memory of Dwayne Messner, Brian Little, Randy Pirtle, and Patty Anderson. John had great respect for all 4 of these individuals, the deaths of Dwayne and Brian were particularly difficult for him, as they had been very close friends. He was very involved in 4H growing up, showing cattle and having multiple Grand Champions at both the InterState Fair in Coffeyville and the Washington County Fair in Dewey.
